Questions
Questions we hear most
If yours is not here, call or send a message.
Does it hurt?
Acupuncture needles are much thinner than the ones used for injections. Most people feel a brief pinch, a dull ache or a heaviness at some points, and some feel nothing. Tell your acupuncturist at any point and they will adjust or remove a needle.
Are the needles clean?
We use sterile, single-use needles, opened in front of you and discarded in a sharps container.
How many visits will I need?
We suggest a plan for the first few visits and adjust it with you. It is our plan, not a promise, and you can stop at any time.
Does insurance cover it?
Some plans pay part of the cost of acupuncture. We do not bill plans, but we give you an itemized receipt to send to yours. See how fees work.
Can I use my HSA or FSA?
Many health savings and flexible spending plans cover acupuncture. Ask your plan administrator before you book.
What should I wear and eat?
Wear something loose, with sleeves and legs that roll up. Eat something light beforehand.
What happens at a first visit?
About 75 minutes: a long talk, a look at your tongue and pulse, a treatment and a plan. See the first visit page.
Is it safe in pregnancy?
Some points and some herbs are avoided in pregnancy. Tell us before your first visit if you are pregnant or might be.
Will I have to stop my medicine?
No. Tell your prescriber and your pharmacist about everything you take, including any herbs we give you, and keep taking your medicine as they direct.
Are herbs safe with my medicines?
Some are and some are not, which is why we ask you to bring us a list of everything you take before we write a formula. See herb safety.
What does acupuncture not do, and when should I see a doctor instead?
It does not replace your doctor, your medicines or emergency care. For anything sudden, severe, new or getting worse, see your doctor first, and for chest pain or trouble breathing call 911.
