Herbal formulas

Classical Chinese formulas, written for you after your visit and made up in our pharmacy.

Most of our formulas start from a classical formula, such as the ones on our home page, grouped by family: tonifying, blood-building and harmonizing, warming, cooling and clearing, and yin-nourishing. We adjust the herbs to your pattern, write the formula into your chart and make it up on site. This statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

From visit to formula

  1. 01

Step 1: We assess your pattern

The same talk, tongue and pulse as an acupuncture visit.

  2. 02

Step 2: We choose a family and a formula

We name it in pinyin and in plain words, and tell you what is in it.

  3. 03

Step 3: We check it against your list

Everything you take is compared with every herb in the formula before we write it.

  4. 04

Step 4: We make it up and explain how to take it

Granules to stir into hot water, loose herbs to simmer, or pills. We tell you how long to take it and when to call us.

Three ways to take a formula

  • Granules

Dissolve in hot water. Quick to make, milder in taste, and easy to take to work.

  • Loose herbs

Simmered at home into a tea. Most flexible, and the strongest taste.

  • Pills

A small, steady dose for formulas taken over a longer time. Easy to carry.

Tell us first

Tell us before we write a formula if any of these apply:

  • You are pregnant, nursing or trying to conceive.
  • You take a blood thinner, a heart, blood sugar or thyroid medicine, or a medicine for blood pressure.
  • You have liver or kidney disease.
  • You are allergic to any herb, food or plant.
  • You take supplements or teas, even occasionally.

What it doesn't do, and when to see a doctor instead

A formula does not replace your medicines, and we will never ask you to stop one. Herbs can cause stomach upset, a rash or other reactions in some people. If you get one, stop the formula and call us. For chest pain, trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or any sudden reaction, call 911.
