How fees work

Plain answers before you book, in the order people ask them.

  • Health plans

We do not bill health plans. You pay us, and some plans pay part of it back to you. Whether yours does depends on the plan, and plans change each year.

    • Some PPO plans include an acupuncture benefit

    • Some plans pay back part of herbal visits too

    • VA Community Care and workers' compensation only where we have agreed with the payer in advance

  • If you pay yourself

You pay at the visit by card or check. A visit's fee depends on its length and on what it includes: acupuncture, a formula, or both. Many health savings and flexible spending cards work for acupuncture, so ask your plan administrator before you book. If cost is a worry, tell our front desk. We keep a few reduced-fee visits each week.

  • Receipts for reimbursement

After each visit we give you an itemized receipt, called a superbill, that you can send to your plan. The plan decides what it pays back. Before you book, ask your plan:

    • Is there an acupuncture benefit?

    • How many visits does it cover?

    • Is there a copay or a deductible?

    • Do I need a referral?

  • An estimate in advance

We give a written estimate in advance to anyone paying without insurance. Ask for it when you book and we send it before your first visit. If a bill ever comes to $400 or more above your estimate, you have the right to dispute it.

  • Checking your benefits

Because we do not bill your plan, there is nothing for us to check on our side. Jolie at the front desk can sit with you while you call your plan, and she will write down what it says.

  • What the first visit includes

About 75 minutes: a talk about your health and what you take, a look at your tongue and pulse, a treatment, and a plan for the next few visits. Your acupuncturist explains the risks and answers your questions before any needle goes in. The fee is on your estimate, or the front desk tells you before you come.

Herbs, priced on their own

A formula is priced separately from a visit, by what is in it and for how many days. We tell you before we make it up and write it on your receipt.

If you have a question about a bill, call us at (626) 555-0100 and ask for Jolie.
