Moxibustion
Warmth from burning mugwort leaf, held close to the body and never on it.
Mugwort is dried and pressed into a stick or a small cone. We light it, hold it a few finger-widths above an area for a few minutes, and take it away before it gets hot. Moxibustion is often added after acupuncture, especially for people who run cold.
There is a light, sweet smoke. If smoke bothers you, tell us before the visit, and we will use a smokeless stick or skip it. We keep the room ventilated and the stick away from hair, cloth and anything that can catch.
A session, in order
- 01
Step 1: We choose an area
Often the lower back, the belly or the feet, after we have talked and felt your pulse.
- 02
Step 2: We light and hold the stick
It stays a few finger-widths from you. You tell us if it gets too warm.
- 03
Step 3: We take it away
A few minutes later, before it feels hot, and the ash goes into a bowl.
- 04
Step 4: We tell you what to do at home
Keep the area covered and warm for the rest of the day, and call us if the skin looks red or sore.
Who comes, what you may feel, how many visits
Who usually comes
People who feel cold easily, whose hands and feet stay cold, or who like warmth on a stiff back.
What you may feel afterward
A steady warmth and sometimes sleepiness. The skin may look slightly pink for a short while.
How many visits
Often once or twice in a visit, as part of a plan we make together. It is our plan, not a promise.
Tell us first
Tell us before moxibustion if any of these apply:
- You are pregnant or might be.
- You have asthma, allergies or a breathing condition that smoke can bother.
- You have a fever or a skin condition in the area.
- You have numb skin or a condition that dulls your sense of heat.
- You bleed or bruise easily.
What it doesn't do, and when to see a doctor instead
Moxibustion does not replace your doctor or your medicines. A fever, a burn, new swelling or severe pain is a reason to call your doctor. For trouble breathing or chest pain, call 911.
